KTT Spring Clean, Sat 20th April

22/4/2013

On Saturday we gathered for the KTT town Spring Clean.  The weather was fine and a quick nip around the town ensured that the streets were looking good, especially Langford Street as their Gathering event is on this weekend.  Library Place got a thorough clean; the tower planters were tidied up, corms stored and old plants removed.  Action was taken to get the hoarding that blew down in the storm put right before any mishap.  During coffee break plans to target a few black spots on the perimeter of town were discussed.  The new rose bed on the Crows Road is budding and looking good.
If you live on the following roads and are available to give an hour or two during the week there is still a bit of work to do:
On the KILLARNEY side - from
West’s Caravan Park to Charlie Johnston’s;
On the GLENBEIGH side - from Mick O'Leary's to Cromane Cross - and John Houlihan’s to The Red Fox.

Contact Mary on 0876609766 or any of the KTT Committee if you need assistance with your area.

Anne and Patricia helping Langford Street's A Team: Muiris, Clodagh, Niamh and Tommy.
Langford St residents, relations and friends came from near and far on Tuesday 16th April to brush and sweep, paint, pick rubbish and remove weeds from the pavements from Mack's Corner to St. James' Gardens.  This flurry of work is in preparation for the upcoming Langford Street Gathering, which is part of the Killorglin Heritage Weekend. It was a lovely mild evening to be out and about.  The street is looking all the better for it and, hopefully, even more residents will come out on Thursday.

On Wednesday 10 April our local Beaver Scout troop conducted a street survey of Killorglin's built environment. The troop did a fantastic job - thanks so much to the scouts and their leaders for accompanying KTT volunteers on such an informative urban walkabout! Keep an eye on the website for a summary of the results of our survey which will be posted in the coming days....

Before
It's surprising what you can find in the bushes. On Tuesday (09Apr'13) evening's work on the Tralee road the emphasis was on making a nice, neat edge to the green areas and cutting back the overgrown bushes and briers.  The edging was finished on Tuesday.

Here's Brendan getting ready to go...

And look what they found on Thursday (11Apr'13) - a beautiful pointed arch gateway!  Stephen informs us that this gate was the entrance to an old Church of Ireland schoolhouse.   The school is no longer there but the arch survived.

Brendan and Cyril, proud of the re-discovery...

In March KTT met with a group involved in creating a TV documentary about food waste minimisation. The crew were looking for a town to participate and Killorglin was chosen for the show. The documentary's focus is on an average Irish town over 6 weeks, showing how communities, families and businesses can reduce their food waste and improve their quality of life.  Filming takes place in April-May 2013.

Live a mile or two from Killorglin? Is your stretch of road affected by rubbish thrown out of car windows? Well now there is a great opportunity to come together with your neighbours and make a difference. Make your area look nice and neat and tidy and cared for!
KWD Recycling is supporting the Kerry County Clean Up by taking for FREE the (red) bags of rubbish collected from the road sides around Killorglin.
Call Mary on 0876609766 if you can participate.
